“Strong narratives are often present in San Diego artworks, which can help us understand and enjoy the feeling of the land, the sea, and the city. I believe one of the qualities that strongly defines San Diego landscapes is how artists capture the lighting of our natural environment. We tend to have high contrasts: strong shadows, bright sunlight. We can reach out our hands to feel the warmth of the sunlight on our skin, and breathe in the fresh air of the ocean and natural parks, but we also recede into urban environments for living, working, connecting with others, or even to be alone. These contrasts can be seen in contemporary San Diego landscapes, and we look forward to sharing this selection of local artwork that demonstrates various perspectives of our city.” – Sonya Sparks, Sparks Gallery Owner & Curator
